The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has categorically dismissed as false and misleading recent reports circulating in the media alleging that Nigerian inmates are provided a daily allowance of N200 instead of the approved N750 set by the Federal Government.

In a statement released on Friday, Assistant Controller of Corrections, Abubakar Umar, refuted the claims, describing them as "mischievous in all ramifications." Umar clarified that inmates in custodial centres across the country are indeed fed with the approved N750, as specified by the Federal Government. He emphasized that the feeding allowance for inmates is publicly available information, and vendors are duly compensated the approved amount upon the completion of supply.

Moreover, Umar acknowledged that even the sanctioned N750 has become unsustainable, and the NCoS is actively engaging with the Federal Government to seek an upward revision of the feeding allowance to align with prevailing economic conditions.

The statement emphasized transparency in the procurement process, with contracts for ration supply being publicly disclosed, and conditions outlined for interested vendors in accordance with the Public Procurement Act of 2007. Umar highlighted the role of ration committees in custodial centres, ensuring the quality assurance of supply, preparation, and distribution of meals to inmates within the approved budget.

Over the years, the authorities have demonstrated commitment to improving inmates' welfare, incorporating effective reformation and rehabilitation programs. The statement concluded by urging the public to disregard the false reports and assured them of the unwavering dedication of the Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, to work for the well-being of individuals in custody. The NCoS expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from well-meaning Nigerians.
